How is the public transportation in New Zealand?

How is the public transportation in New Zealand?
Specifically in:

1) Auckland
2) Wellington
3) Nelson

Which city, of those three, has the best? And would you absolutely need a car in any of those cities if you were to live there?

Well, I dont know where you are from...
But compared to Asia, the public transport in New Zealand sucks.
I will give you a rundown of public transport in Auckland.

There is NO SUBWAY in Auckland the only 'sub' part of the TRAIN in Auckland is the inner city terminal.
